The Palatial type can be traced back to the original Palace of Industry, where the presence of this major public pavilion was matched by the correspondingly large open space surrounding its building faces. The greatest of these spaces travelled from the southern face of the Palace of Industry down to the water’s edge with an axial relationship established by a central approach.
